Global Tourism Surged in January

The number of foreign visitors to major markets rose by 27% in January 2026, signaling a robust start to the year for the tourism sector. Separately, Greece has reportedly overtaken the U.S., U.K., and Germany in tourism revenue, setting a new benchmark with $27.9 billion.

The recent surge builds on a landmark 2025, when global tourism fully recovered from the pandemic, logging 1.523 billion international arrivals—a 4% increase over the previous year. The UN projects continued, though more normalized, growth of 3-4% for 2026, driven by strong consumer demand and increased air connectivity. Greece's reported $27.9 billion in revenue (€23.6 billion) reflects its full-year performance for 2025, a 9.4% increase from 2024. This revenue growth significantly outpaced the 5.6% rise in visitor arrivals, which reached nearly 38 million people. The widening gap between arrival and revenue growth points to a successful strategy of attracting higher-value tourism. Average spending per trip rose by 3.8% in 2025. The resulting €20.25 billion surplus in the travel balance was enough to offset nearly 60% of the country's goods trade deficit. This growth isn't uniform, with a clear shift toward emerging markets and new travel patterns. Trends for 2026 show travelers prioritizing "anti-tourism" by avoiding overcrowded hotspots, seeking authentic local experiences, and increasingly choosing destinations based on their sustainability practices. Destinations capitalizing on these trends are seeing the fastest growth. Countries like Saudi Arabia, under its Vision 2030 plan, along with Albania, Vietnam, and Japan, are leading tourism expansion by simplifying visa policies and offering alternatives to traditional hubs. While the outlook is positive, significant headwinds remain. A UN Tourism survey of experts identified high travel costs, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical risks as the primary challenges that could weigh on traveler confidence throughout 2026.
