Fremont Police Schedule 'Chat with a Cop' Event
The Fremont Police Department has announced its 2026 "Chat with a Cop" schedule, with the first event on March 12. The informal Q&A session, dubbed Coffee with a Cop, will take place at Suju's Coffee on Thornton Ave, giving residents a chance to connect with local officers.
The "Coffee with a Cop" initiative originated in Hawthorne, California, in 2011 as a way to break down barriers and improve communication between police and the community. The program's success in fostering informal conversations led to its expansion across all 50 states and into 15 other countries. The core idea is to create opportunities for interaction outside of crisis situations, which are often the only times residents engage with law enforcement. A 2017 survey found that 70% of attendees reported an improved perception of police after participating in an event. Fremont Police Department's "Chat with a Cop" is part of its broader 2024-2027 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes seeking additional community engagement and communication opportunities. The department hosts these informal events approximately six times a year, sometimes offering variations like "Badges and Boba" to connect with different community members. The choice of Suju's Coffee on Thornton Avenue is significant as the family-owned coffee house has been a community hub since 1992. The owner, Mahesh Patel, has a history of supporting local events and has previously hosted "Coffee with the Cops" in the shop's conference room.
