Google, Xcel to Build Minnesota Data Center

Xcel Energy and Google announced a partnership to build a new data center in southern Minnesota powered by clean energy. The multi-million-dollar project involves Xcel investing in new renewable generation and grid upgrades to support the facility. The project is expected to create numerous local construction jobs and establish benchmarks for sustainable design, according to a report.

- This project represents Google's second attempt at a Minnesota data center, following an abandoned $600 million project in Becker in 2022. The new agreement with Xcel includes an exit fee to safeguard against a similar withdrawal. - The data center will be located in Pine Island, Minnesota, on an 88-acre portion of a larger 482-acre industrial project site. The project is expected to generate around 500 construction jobs during its build-out. - To power the facility, Google and Xcel are adding 1,900 megawatts of new clean energy to the grid, comprising 1,400 MW of wind and 200 MW of solar power. This also includes a 300 MW iron-air battery storage system from Form Energy, which is set to be the world's largest by gigawatt-hour capacity. - Google will cover all costs for the new grid infrastructure required for the data center and is contributing $50 million to Xcel's Capacity*Connect Program to enhance overall grid reliability. - For business graduates targeting construction management, key transferable skills include project management, financial management, and strong communication.
