Peter Jackson Gets Cannes Honor

Director Peter Jackson will receive the Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes, cementing his legacy as one of cinema's greats. The Lord of the Rings trilogy director joins an elite group of filmmakers to receive the festival's highest honor. The award recognizes his groundbreaking work in both filmmaking technology and storytelling.

The Honorary Palme d'Or is a lifetime achievement award given to major filmmakers who are not in the main competition. Past recipients of the honor include Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, and Jodie Foster. The main Palme d'Or for Best Feature Film is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. Jackson's career began long before Middle-earth with low-budget "splatstick" horror comedies like "Bad Taste" (1987) and "Braindead" (1992). He gained mainstream critical attention with the 1994 drama "Heavenly Creatures," for which he and his partner Fran Walsh received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Alongside his directing, Jackson co-founded the visual effects company Weta Digital. The company has been at the forefront of filmmaking technology, pioneering performance-capture technology for the character Gollum in *The Lord of the Rings*, a role reprised by Andy Serkis. Following the success of *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy, which collectively won 17 Academy Awards, Jackson directed the 2005 blockbuster remake of "King Kong." More recently, he has directed acclaimed documentaries, including the World War I film "They Shall Not Grow Old" (2018) and the series "The Beatles: Get Back" (2021). In addition to his film accolades, Jackson was knighted in 2010 in his native New Zealand for his services to film. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2014. Jackson is returning to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, producing a new film titled "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," slated for a 2027 release. Andy Serkis is set to direct and star in the film, with Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens involved in every stage of production.
