Gnarls Barkley Drops Final Album

Gnarls Barkley just released their third and final album *Atlanta*, officially ending the duo of CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse. This closes the chapter on one of hip-hop's most genre-bending acts known for pushing creative boundaries. The album is their first release since their groundbreaking run that included "Crazy" and redefined what hip-hop collaborations could sound like.

The 18-year gap between Gnarls Barkley's second album, *The Odd Couple*, and their final release, *Atlanta*, was a period of significant individual activity for both members. During this time, CeeLo Green released four solo albums and two albums with his original group, Goodie Mob. Meanwhile, Danger Mouse solidified his reputation as a highly sought-after producer, collaborating with artists like Adele, The Black Keys, and Norah Jones, and forming the band Broken Bells with The Shins' James Mercer. Their debut album, *St. Elsewhere* (2006), was a critical and commercial success, largely driven by the phenomenal reception of its lead single, "Crazy." The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and made history in the UK as the first single to top the charts based on download sales alone. The album itself earned the duo a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. The duo's sound is a distinctive fusion of neo-soul, psychedelic soul, and alternative rock. Danger Mouse's production often incorporates elements from a wide array of genres, including spaghetti Western soundtracks, creating a cinematic and experimental backdrop for CeeLo's soulful and emotive vocals. This unique blend is what allowed them to carve out a unique space in the musical landscape of the mid-2000s. The reunion for a final album was a decision to definitively close the chapter on Gnarls Barkley. The lead single, "Pictures," is a nostalgic look back at their shared roots in Atlanta, with CeeLo Green's lyrics drawing from his childhood experiences riding the city's MARTA train system. The album's title, *Atlanta*, further grounds the project in the city that shaped both artists. The long hiatus was not without its complexities. In 2012, CeeLo Green faced sexual assault allegations. While the sexual assault charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence, he pleaded no contest to a felony count of furnishing ecstasy to the woman involved. The incident and his subsequent comments on social media generated significant controversy. Danger Mouse, born Brian Burton, first gained widespread attention for his 2004 mash-up, *The Grey Album*, which blended The Beatles' *White Album* with Jay-Z's *The Black Album*. This project showcased his innovative approach to sampling and production that would become a hallmark of his work with Gnarls Barkley and other artists. CeeLo Green, born Thomas Callaway, was a founding member of the influential Atlanta hip-hop group Goodie Mob before embarking on a solo career and then forming Gnarls Barkley. His distinctive, high-pitched vocal delivery has been a constant throughout his varied musical projects. The duo's visual presentation was often as eclectic as their music. For live performances, they frequently appeared in elaborate costumes, adding a theatrical element to their genre-defying sound. This commitment to a unique aesthetic further distinguished them from their contemporaries.
