Topaz Labs Claims AI Models Can Now Run Locally

Topaz Labs has introduced Topaz NeuroStream, a new technology it claims allows complex AI models to run on consumer-grade hardware. The company says its proprietary VRAM optimization could reduce reliance on cloud-based AI, enabling more powerful local applications for image and video processing.

The bottleneck for running powerful AI applications on personal computers has consistently been the amount of dedicated video memory (VRAM) available on a graphics card. Many sophisticated AI models for image and video processing require large amounts of VRAM, often 8GB at a minimum, with 16GB or even 24GB recommended for more complex tasks and higher resolutions. This has historically pushed high-end AI processing to cloud-based services. Topaz Labs' existing AI products, such as Photo AI and Video AI, already carry significant hardware requirements. For certain generative AI features and upscaling tasks, the company recommends at least 6GB to 8GB of VRAM, with some advanced models requiring even more to function correctly, if at all. Users with less VRAM often experience slow performance or are unable to use specific tools. In a collaboration with NVIDIA, Topaz Labs optimized NeuroStream specifically for NVIDIA's GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs. According to Topaz, this will allow large video models that were previously unusable on most consumer systems to run effectively on their hardware. The company states this expands hardware compatibility and democratizes access to advanced AI models. Alongside the NeuroStream announcement, the company released a new local image enhancement model called "Wonder 2 (Local)." Topaz Labs claims this new, complex model is made possible specifically because of the NeuroStream optimization, implying it would otherwise be too resource-intensive for consumer-grade hardware. This technology is positioned as foundational for future local AI applications from the company and potentially the wider industry.
