Adidas Launches Hyperboost Edge
Adidas is bringing Boost cushioning back with the new Hyperboost Edge, debuting "pebbled supercritical foam" for maximum comfort and performance in running. The release marks Adidas's renewed focus on their signature cushioning technology.
The original Boost technology, a partnership with chemical company BASF, revolutionized the industry in 2013 by fusing together thermoplastic urethane (TPU) pellets. This method provided a unique combination of cushioning and energy return that challenged the dominance of traditional EVA foams. Hyperboost Pro, the foam in the new Hyperboost Edge, is fundamentally different and not a direct evolution of the original's TPU base. It is a pelletized or "beaded" version of Adidas's elite racing foam, Lightstrike Pro. This means the new cushioning is derived from an ePEBA (polyether block amide) compound, similar to the super foams used in top-tier marathon shoes. The Hyperboost Edge is positioned as Adidas's first "super trainer" without a carbon plate, designed for daily runs. It features a massive 45mm stack height in the heel, putting it in the maximal cushioning category and in direct competition with shoes like the Asics Superblast and Saucony Endorphin Azura. A notable design shift places the iconic three stripes directly on the midsole for the first time in the brand's running footwear. This change is intended to visually emphasize the shoe's core technology—the new Hyperboost Pro foam that makes up its substantial, "inflated" silhouette. This launch represents a strategic push by Adidas in the highly competitive performance running market, where it trails brands like Nike, Brooks, and Hoka in popularity among race finishers. The Adizero franchise has seen success in elite racing, and the Hyperboost Edge aims to bring that high-performance technology to a broader audience of everyday runners. The development included consumer research with the University of Cologne, where 73% of 60 runners in a study preferred the energy return of the Hyperboost Edge compared to their own shoes. The Adidas Hyperboost Edge is set for its initial global release on March 17 with a retail price of $200. A wider launch with additional colorways is planned to follow on May 1.
