Canadian PM Expected to Call Snap Election

Prime Minister Carney is expected to call a snap election today. The move comes amid an ongoing trade war with the U.S. and is seen as an attempt to secure a new mandate before potential economic pressures increase, creating a volatile business and political climate for brands in Canada.

The snap election, scheduled for April 28, was called by Mark Carney just ten days after he became Prime Minister. Carney replaced Justin Trudeau, who resigned as leader of the Liberal Party in January amid waning popularity after more than nine years in office. Carney is seeking a "strong, positive mandate" to navigate the ongoing trade war with the United States. He has framed the election as a direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump's "unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty," stating, "He wants to break us, so America can own us." The trade dispute escalated on February 1, 2025, when the U.S. imposed sweeping tariffs, including a 25% tariff on most Canadian imports and a 10% tax on energy products. Canada retaliated with its own tariffs on billions of dollars worth of U.S. goods, impacting key integrated sectors like steel, aluminum, and automotive. Calling the election is a strategic gamble to capitalize on a massive swing in public opinion. As recently as two months ago, polls showed the Liberals trailing the opposition Conservatives by 23 points; they now hold a slight lead, a shift attributed to Trudeau's departure and a rise in nationalism against U.S. pressure. The main opposition is the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, who has promised to "put Canada first for a change." Before the recent polling shift, the Conservatives had been widely expected to win the next election in a landslide. A key tactical reason for the early election call is that Carney, a former central banker, is not a sitting member of parliament. By dissolving parliament, he avoids having to govern from outside the House of Commons and face a potentially hostile chamber that was due to return from a two-month suspension.
