Spotify Rolls Out AI 'Prompted Playlists'

Spotify is launching 'Prompted Playlists,' a new AI tool letting Premium users in the US and Canada create playlists using natural language descriptions of moods, themes, or stories. The feature, previously tested in New Zealand, represents a major shift from manual curation to conversational, AI-driven music discovery.

Spotify's AI playlist generator, officially named 'Prompted Playlist', leverages a user's entire listening history for the first time in its playlist creation process. The feature analyzes prompts that can include genres, moods, artists, and even emojis, but has safeguards to block offensive requests or references to current events and brands. The technology goes beyond simple keyword matching by combining the user's prompt with real-time data on music trends and cultural moments. Each track added to the generated playlist comes with a brief, AI-written explanation for its inclusion, and users can set the playlist to refresh daily or weekly to keep it current. The feature first entered a beta testing phase in New Zealand in December 2025. Following that, it rolled out to Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada in January 2026, and expanded to the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Sweden by February 2026. Sulinna Ong, Spotify's Global Head of Editorial, noted that the tool offers a more intuitive starting point for users than a blank slate, aiming to replicate the intention of human-curated playlists. The company positions the feature as a collaboration with its algorithm, giving users more direct control over music discovery. This move places Spotify in direct competition with other tech giants integrating similar AI features. Apple recently announced 'Playlist Playground' for Apple Music, which also uses text prompts to create playlists. This follows a broader industry trend where AI is fundamentally reshaping music discovery and consumption. While Spotify has used AI for features like the AI DJ and Discover Weekly, 'Prompted Playlist' represents a deeper integration of generative AI. The global generative AI in music market is projected to grow from $642.8 million in 2024 to $3 billion by 2030, highlighting the strategic importance of this feature.
