Rochelle Jordan's Renaissance
British-Jamaican R&B artist Rochelle Jordan is experiencing a late-career renaissance after 15 years in the industry. Her unique blend of R&B and house music is finally getting widespread recognition for pushing genre boundaries and offering a "future-facing" sound.
Her musical roots trace back to her childhood home in Toronto, where she absorbed the sounds of her father's Northern soul and reggae collection and her brother's UK house and drum and bass from the other side of her bedroom wall. This early exposure to a diverse sonic palette laid the groundwork for her genre-blending style. Jordan's career began to take shape in the early 2010s with a series of releases, including the EPs *ROJO* (2011) and *Pressure* (2012), which garnered blog acclaim. She built an early following by uploading covers of 90s R&B classics to YouTube, which is how she connected with her career-long producer, KLSH. Before her recent resurgence, Jordan had already made notable inroads in the industry. She co-wrote and was featured on Childish Gambino's (Donald Glover's) Grammy-nominated 2014 album, *Because the Internet*, and opened for Jessie Ware on a US tour. Her 2014 debut album, *1021*, produced streaming hits like "Lowkey" and "Follow Me." The seven-year gap between her debut album *1021* and 2021's *Play With the Changes* marked a period of artistic and spiritual growth. Her latest album, *Through The Wall* (2025), features a roster of acclaimed producers including Kaytranada, Machinedrum, Jimmy Edgar, and DāM-Funk, further cementing her position in the electronic and R&B worlds. The critical success of her latest work is seen by some as the world finally catching up to the sound she and KLSH have been cultivating for years. Her music is drawing comparisons to iconic artists like Aaliyah and Janet Jackson, and her album *Through The Wall* is being discussed alongside major contemporary dance music releases from artists like Beyoncé and Kelela. In late 2025, Jordan made her U.S. national television debut on Good Morning America, performing tracks from her new album. This appearance, along with her signing to the independent label EMPIRE in 2024, signals a new level of mainstream recognition for the veteran artist.
