OpenAI Raises Record $110B, Partners with AWS

OpenAI just shattered venture funding records, raising $110 billion in a round backed by Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank that pushes its valuation to $730 billion. As part of the deal, Amazon Web Services will become the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI’s advanced “Frontier” models, integrating them directly into the AWS Bedrock platform. This move cements OpenAI's dominance and creates a powerful counterweight to competitors.

This record-breaking funding round is more than double the size of OpenAI's previous major financing, a $40 billion round led by SoftBank in March 2025 which at the time was the largest private funding round in history. The new influx of capital is earmarked for scaling OpenAI's compute infrastructure, including significant investments in initiatives like the Stargate supercomputing project. The partnership with Amazon Web Services marks a significant shift, as Microsoft's Azure has been OpenAI's primary cloud provider since a 2016 agreement. While the terms of OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft remain, the new AWS deal makes Amazon's cloud the exclusive third-party provider for OpenAI's "Frontier" enterprise program. As part of the deal, OpenAI will also utilize 2GW of computing capacity from Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips. Nvidia's $30 billion investment deepens its ties with OpenAI, which has heavily relied on Nvidia's GPUs for developing its models. This expanded partnership will focus on utilizing Nvidia's upcoming "Vera Rubin" GPU architecture to increase the computing power available for both training and running OpenAI's most advanced AI models, a critical process known as inference. SoftBank's additional $30 billion investment through its Vision Fund 2 continues its substantial backing of OpenAI. The Japanese conglomerate has been a major investor since September 2024 and views its stake in OpenAI as central to its strategy of investing in companies at the forefront of the artificial intelligence trend. The AWS Bedrock platform, where OpenAI's "Frontier" models will be integrated, is a fully managed service that provides access to a variety of foundation models from leading AI companies through a single API. This allows developers to build and scale generative AI applications with enterprise-grade security and the ability to customize models with their own data. This strategic alliance between OpenAI, Amazon, and Nvidia creates a powerful bloc in the increasingly competitive AI landscape. It directly challenges competitors like Google, which develops its own AI models (Gemini) and custom AI chips (TPUs), and other well-funded AI labs such as Anthropic and Cohere.
