Generic Semaglutide Coming to Market

Online pharmacy PharmaGiant.com announced an expansion of its generic medication catalog, which will soon include a generic version of semaglutide. The move aims to increase affordable access to the popular drug used for treating diabetes and obesity.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in brand-name drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar, telling the brain you're full and slowing down digestion. The FDA has approved it for managing type 2 diabetes, long-term weight management, and reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events in certain patients. The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, has seen a significant increase in profits due to the high demand for these drugs. Without insurance, the monthly cost for these medications can be substantial, with Wegovy's list price around $1,350 and Ozempic's at approximately $1,028. Key patents for semaglutide are set to expire in several countries, including India, China, and Canada, starting in March 2026. This will open the door for generic versions to enter the market. In the United States, however, patent protection is expected to last until at least December 2031. The introduction of generics is anticipated to dramatically lower prices. In India, for instance, analysts predict the cost of generic semaglutide could be nearly 50% lower than the current branded therapies. This is expected to significantly increase access to the medication for a much larger population worldwide. In response to impending competition, Novo Nordisk has announced plans to reduce the list prices of its brand-name semaglutide products in the U.S. by up to 50% starting in January 2027. The company is also preparing to compete with generics by potentially marketing authorized generics under different brand names at a lower cost. Several pharmaceutical companies, including Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Zydus Lifesciences, are gearing up to launch their generic versions of semaglutide as soon as the patents expire in their respective markets. This influx of competition is poised to reshape the landscape for weight management and diabetes treatment.
