Nissan Begins 2026 Versa Production in Mexico

Nissan has launched production of its 2026 model year Versa sedan at its Aguascalientes plant in Mexico. The start of production underscores Mexico's continuing importance as a key manufacturing hub within the North American automotive supply chain, despite ongoing trade policy volatility and USMCA-related compliance challenges.

- The U.S. International Trade Commission launched a formal investigation in February 2026 into the USMCA's automotive rules of origin, with a report due by July 2027. This review will assess the economic impact and technological relevance of the current rules, which mandate 75% regional content for duty-free access, and could lead to stricter standards. - This action follows a USMCA dispute panel in late 2022 that ruled against the U.S. interpretation of how regional content value should be calculated for "core parts," a decision seen as a victory for Mexico and Canada. - The Aguascalientes A1 plant is one of Nissan's most efficient globally, with the capacity to assemble 65 units per hour. The larger Aguascalientes complex, which has received billions in investment including $2 billion for its second plant (A2), exports vehicles to nearly 70 countries. - The Versa is entering a strong market, having seen U.S. sales jump 71.7% to 42,589 units in the 2024 calendar year. In Canada, 2024 sales increased 66% year-over-year. - The production highlights Mexico's growing role as a nearshoring hub; the country produced nearly 4 million vehicles in 2024 and is projected to become the world's fifth-largest vehicle producer. The auto sector now accounts for 21.7% of Mexico's manufacturing GDP. - Despite growth, manufacturers in Mexico face significant operational risks, including skilled labor shortages for EV production, infrastructure gaps in energy and logistics, and supply chain vulnerabilities due to reliance on foreign-sourced sensors and chips.
