US & Israel Strike Iran, Widening Conflict

The U.S. and Israel have launched a new wave of strikes on Iranian ballistic missile sites and naval assets following the assassination of Iran's supreme leader. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel and Gulf states, while the UK has agreed to let the U.S. use its bases for potential further action, signaling a significant regional escalation.

The initial intelligence for the decapitation strike on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came from months of CIA tracking, which identified his location at a leadership compound in Tehran. The daytime attack involved Israeli jets dropping 30 bombs on the compound, killing Khamenei and approximately 40 other senior Iranian leaders, including his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild. The U.S. has significantly increased its military presence, marking the largest buildup in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq invasion. This includes the deployment of Carrier Strike Groups 3 and 12, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford, along with additional F-22, F-15E, and F-35 fighters to bases in the region. In retaliation for the assassination, Iran has launched extensive missile and drone attacks. Targets have included Israel and U.S. bases in Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Iran has reportedly used a variety of missiles, including the Emad, Ghadr, Kheybar Shekan, and Fatah-1, in these retaliatory strikes. U.S. forces have targeted Iran's naval capabilities, with President Trump announcing that nine Iranian naval vessels have been destroyed, including a Jamaran-class corvette. The strikes aim to "annihilate" the Iranian navy and destroy its missile industry. The UK has agreed to a U.S. request to use its military bases for "specific and limited defensive purposes" to target Iranian missile sites. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the decision was for the collective self-defense of regional allies and to protect the approximately 200,000 British citizens in the region. Shortly after the announcement, the UK's Akrotiri air force base in Cyprus was hit by a suspected drone. This conflict highlights the growing role of unmanned systems, with both sides employing sophisticated drone and counter-drone technologies. The Pentagon has been accelerating its efforts to field counter-drone capabilities, establishing the Joint Interagency Task Force 401 to streamline the delivery of these systems to warfighters.
