Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker
Belgian authorities, with support from the French navy, have seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea believed to be part of Moscow's 'shadow fleet'. The operation marks a significant step-up in European enforcement of sanctions designed to stop Russia from covertly exporting oil to fund its war efforts.
The seized tanker, identified as the Ethera, was intercepted in Belgium's exclusive economic zone while sailing under a false Guinean flag. Authorities have opened a criminal investigation after finding suspected forged documents on board; the vessel has been on the EU's sanctions list since October 2025. This operation, dubbed "Blue Intruder," was carried out by Belgian special forces with helicopter support from the French Navy. The tanker is being escorted to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. French President Emmanuel Macron described the joint action as a "major blow" to the shadow fleet. Russia's shadow fleet is a collection of aging tankers with obscure ownership used to transport oil outside the G7's price cap, which was designed to limit Moscow's war revenue. These ships often operate without proper Western insurance, engage in risky ship-to-ship transfers, and switch off their tracking systems to hide their movements, posing significant environmental hazards. The Ethera has reported links to the son of a former senior Iranian political advisor, pointing to overlapping networks for evading international sanctions. Since 2022, Russia is estimated to have spent around $10 billion to acquire hundreds of older vessels to build this fleet, many of them sold by Greek shipping companies. The seizure of the Ethera is part of a broader trend of increasingly assertive enforcement actions against Russia's illicit oil trade. In January 2026, French authorities temporarily detained another suspected shadow fleet tanker named the Grinch, while U.S. forces seized a sanctioned vessel in the Caribbean. The captain of the Ethera, a Russian national, was taken in for questioning by investigators. The Russian embassy in Belgium stated it had not received official notification of the seizure or information regarding the nationalities of the other crew members.
