Planet Ecaz Lore Explored in Detail
The *Gom Jabbar* podcast revisited Planet Ecaz, known as "The Greenhouse Planet," which was the fief of House Plana famous for botanical research. The Imperium destroyed the planet with nuclear weapons to quell rebellion, leaving it toxic and uninhabitable for thousands of years. While rarely detailed in Frank Herbert's original work, Ecaz's plants and terminology permeate the Dune universe, with much detail coming from the *Dune Encyclopedia*.
Beyond its reputation for botanical research, Ecaz was nicknamed "The sculptor's paradise." This was due to its native fogwood, a unique plant that artists could shape and sculpt using only the power of their thoughts. The planet is the origin of several crucial substances in the Imperium. These include the high-energy liquid called Sapho juice, used by Mentats to enhance their cognitive abilities, which stains their lips a distinctive ruby red. Ecaz also produced the narcotic truth drug verite and the addictive substance Semuta, which induced a state of timeless ecstasy when paired with specific music. Ecaz's ecosystem yielded more than just mind-altering plants. The blood-grained elacca wood produced a drug that stripped away the will for self-preservation, often used to prepare gladiators for combat. Additionally, the hufuf vine was woven into "claw fiber" or krimskell rope, a material whose knots would tighten when pulled. The ruling family, House Ecaz, was embroiled in a significant conflict known as the Ecazi Revolt in 10,138 AG. This rebellion erupted after Padishah Emperor Elrood IX's controversial marriage. The revolt was ultimately suppressed with the help of forces from House Atreides and House Vernius, restoring Archduke Ferdinand Ecaz to his throne. House Ecaz also engaged in a lengthy War of Assassins with the rival House Moritani. This feud escalated after a Moritani attack on the neutral Swordmaster world of Ginaz, which resulted in the deaths of over a hundred Swordmasters and drew them into the conflict alongside House Ecaz. While House Plana is mentioned as an early fief holder, other houses like House Metulli also contested control of the planet. The *Dune Encyclopedia* further expands on this, naming House Xitan as a later ruling entity, showcasing the planet's complex political history.
