GitHub Copilot for Command Line Now Available

GitHub's Copilot CLI, an AI-powered coding assistant for the command-line terminal, is now generally available for all paid Copilot subscribers. The tool is designed to help developers automate command-line coding, generate code snippets, and script workflows directly within the terminal environment. Its availability aims to reduce friction and accelerate development cycles for technical teams.

- The tool evolved from a public preview launched in September 2025 into what GitHub now describes as an "agentic" development environment capable of planning and executing complex tasks, running tests, and iterating on code directly in the terminal. - Core functionalities include `gh copilot suggest` for generating command suggestions and `gh copilot explain` for breaking down complex commands into natural language. The system can also be run in an interactive mode as an autonomous agent that can read, write, and execute code within a directory. - For enterprise users, administrators must explicitly enable Copilot CLI access through the organization's policy settings. GitHub assures business and enterprise customers that their code is not used to train the public models, and a "duplicate detection filter" is in place to reduce suggestions that match public code repositories. - The CLI is powered by a variety of large language models, and users on higher-tier plans can switch between models from providers like OpenAI (GPT series) and Anthropic (Claude series) to balance speed and reasoning capabilities. - GitHub offers a "Trust Center" that details security and privacy measures, and holds compliance certifications such as SOC 1 and SOC 2, Type 2, which are relevant for contractors handling sensitive information. For government clients, GitHub also provides solutions to address data residency requirements. - The service is included with all paid GitHub Copilot subscriptions, which for individuals start at $10 per month for the "Pro" tier. Business plans are priced at $19 per user/month, while the Enterprise tier costs $39 per user/month and requires a GitHub Enterprise Cloud subscription. - The tool fits into a competitive landscape of AI command-line assistants that includes Amazon Q Developer (formerly CodeWhisperer), Google's Gemini Code Assist, and privacy-focused options like Tabnine.
