Venice Biennale 2026 Artist List

The 2026 Venice Biennale revealed its artist list for Koyo Kouoh's curatorial vision, with the curatorial team detailing how they are bringing the late curator's vision to life. The announcement has generated substantial excitement in the art world for the fresh perspectives and critical engagement expected at the event.

- The main exhibition, titled "In Minor Keys," will feature 111 artists and artist collectives, a significant decrease from the 330 participants in the 2024 edition curated by Adriano Pedrosa. - Koyo Kouoh, the first African woman selected to curate the Biennale, had fully developed the exhibition's framework before her death in May 2025; her curatorial team is now realizing her vision. - The exhibition's theme, "In Minor Keys," is an invitation to focus on more subtle and sensory experiences in art, drawing inspiration from jazz improvisation and the writings of Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia-Márquez. - The structure of the exhibition will move away from traditional sections and instead be organized around conceptual motifs such as "Shrines," "Procession," "Schools," and "Rest." - The "Schools" motif will uniquely feature six artist-led organizations, including the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute and the G.A.S. Foundation in Lagos, to highlight their role in supporting artistic ecosystems. - The list of participants has a strong focus on living artists from the Global South, with the oldest born in 1943 and the youngest in 1997. - Tributes to the late Senegalese artist Issa Samb and the late American artist Beverly Buchanan will be presented as "Shrines" in the Central Pavilion. - A procession of poets will be held in the Giardini during the opening week to honor Kouoh's memory, inspired by the Poetry Caravan she organized from Dakar to Timbuktu in 1999.
