Blockchain on chip

A cross‑team effort (Arm, Minima Global, University of Southampton, Siemens) ported a full blockchain node to embedded Arm hardware — including a Java→C++ port, hardware SHA3 acceleration and drone telemetry support. (x.com) That demo shows full‑node crypto workloads can run on constrained edge devices, opening new patterns for secure telemetry and offline verification on drones and outdoor gear. (x.com)

Minima says it refactored its client from Java into C++, enabling direct compilation for Arm, RISC‑V and microcontroller‑class targets and delivering an approximately 5× reduction in memory use according to its December 15, 2025 progress report. (minima.global) The prototype runs on the Arm processor subsystem inside an FPGA development board and uses dedicated cryptographic accelerators implemented in the FPGA fabric that are connected to the Arm runtime via high‑bandwidth DMA. (minima.global) Independent writeups and the project’s technical reflections note the implementation includes hardware‑accelerated SHA‑3 hashing for on‑device cryptographic work and that the system reached Technology Readiness Level 6 after an operational demonstration. (outposts.io) A University of Southampton release says student engineers executed a live flight demonstration in which an autonomous drone recorded operational and sensor telemetry in real time onto the onboard blockchain, with the university publishing results on 4 March 2026. (southampton.ac.uk) The programme is explicitly collaborative: Minima, the University of Southampton, Siemens Cre8Ventures and ARM Flexible Access partnered on the initiative that targets embedding a full Layer‑1 node into drone flight‑controller hardware. (minima.global) Minima and partners have positioned the system as a “blockchain black box” for tamper‑resistant flight audit trails, and the work has been covered by engineering press including The Engineer while Minima published a short documentary about the project and its TRL‑6 milestone.
