45 New Trail Running Shoes Drop

Trail runners can preview 2026's trail running shoe releases covering 23 brands and 45 models. The comprehensive review highlights new trends in outsole technology, upper materials, and innovative designs, with expert Dom Layfield sharing his top picks from The Running Event. This resource covers the latest performance footwear for the new season.

The Running Event (TRE), held December 2-4, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, served as the launchpad for next year's trail running footwear. The industry trade show highlighted a major trend for 2026: a surge in "road-to-trail" or "gravel running" shoes, designed for versatility across different surfaces. A key technology showcased was the widespread adoption of supercritical foams, such as nitrogen-infused or PEBA-based midsoles, which offer a lighter and more responsive cushioning that lasts longer than traditional EVA foam. Brands are also focusing on integrated "bootie" or gaiter-style collars to enhance comfort, stability, and keep debris out. Expert Dom Layfield, an accomplished ultrarunner with a competitive race history and an analytical approach to the sport, was among the industry veterans previewing the new lines. His insights help cut through the marketing to identify true performance innovations. Among the notable releases is the Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2, an update to the popular "super shoe" with a redesigned upper for improved comfort. Nike is also making a strong push with its ACG line, including the Zegama 3, which features an increased stack of ZoomX foam and a Vibram Megagrip outsole. Hoka is updating its popular Zinal 3 with a new supercritical EVA midsole for a more propulsive feel, though it is moving away from a Vibram outsole to its own proprietary rubber. Meanwhile, the Speedgoat 6 continues to be a go-to for ultra distances, balancing significant cushioning with reliable grip on technical terrain. Newcomers and evolving brands are making their mark as well. French brand Kiprun is entering the U.S. market with models like the Kipsummit Max, offering high-stack trainers at competitive price points. Inov-8 is also stepping into the modern "super shoe" arena with its new Trail Fly Pro, featuring a supercritical TPEE midsole foam.
