US, Israel Launch Coordinated Strikes on Iran

The initial wave of strikes, dubbed Operation Epic Fury by the U.S. and Operation Roaring Lion by Israel, was far more extensive than initially reported, targeting not just military infrastructure but also Iran's senior leadership. The attack on the Pasteur district in Tehran struck the compound of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, resulting in his death, which was later confirmed by Iranian state media. Among the other high-ranking officials confirmed killed are Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Mohammad Pakpour, and National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani. In total, sources report that approximately 40 senior Iranian officials were killed in the coordinated attacks that spanned multiple cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, and Qom. The Iranian Red Crescent has reported at least 555 fatalities in over 130 cities across the country. Iran's retaliation was swift and widespread, targeting not only Israel but also U.S. military installations across the Gulf. The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting 152 of 165 ballistic missiles and 506 of 541 drones, though falling debris and penetrating strikes caused damage to Dubai's Burj Al Arab hotel and the airport. Qatar intercepted 65 ballistic missiles and 12 drones, while Saudi Arabia intercepted five ballistic missiles aimed at a facility hosting U.S. forces. Civilian and military casualties have been reported across the region. In Israel, 11 people have been killed in missile strikes, including one on a residential area in Tel Aviv. The U.S. military has confirmed at least four American service members have been killed. In the Gulf, strikes on Kuwait International Airport caused injuries, and three migrant workers were killed in the UAE. The strikes occurred despite ongoing, Omani-mediated nuclear negotiations in Geneva between the U.S. and Iran, leading Tehran to accuse the U.S. of acting in bad faith. The international response has been divided, with Russia and China criticizing the U.S.-Israeli military action, while key European allies like the UK, France, and Germany have urged a return to talks while condemning Iran's retaliatory strikes. In the wake of Khamenei's death, an interim leadership council has been formed in Iran, consisting of the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council. While President Trump has called on the Iranian people to "take over" their government, analysts suggest a systemic collapse is unlikely, with a successor expected to emerge from within the existing clerical establishment.
