NBA Introduces Anti-Tanking Rules

The NBA will enact new anti-tanking rules next season to discourage teams from intentionally losing games for better draft positioning. The changes are expected to significantly impact team strategy and player rotations as the league aims to maintain competitive integrity. Stephen Curry will miss five more games despite a clean MRI, while the Lakers anticipate full returns for Doncic and Reaves in their upcoming Clippers showdown.

- The NBA last adjusted the draft lottery odds in 2019, flattening the chances for the top pick so that the three teams with the worst records each have an equal 14% chance. Previously, the team with the worst record had a 25% chance of receiving the first pick. - Among the new rule changes being considered are preventing teams from receiving a top-four draft pick in consecutive years, freezing the lottery odds at the trade deadline, and allocating lottery odds based on a team's record over two years. - This move comes after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described the current tanking situation as "worse this year than we've seen in recent memory." Recently, the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers were fined $500,000 and $100,000, respectively, for violating the league's player participation policy. - The league has a history of penalizing teams for sitting players during crucial games, including a $750,000 fine issued to the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 for resting key players when a spot in the play-in tournament was still possible. - The most famous modern example of long-term tanking was the Philadelphia 76ers' strategy known as "The Process," which began in 2013. The team intentionally lost games for several seasons to acquire high draft picks, which eventually yielded stars like Joel Embiid. - The original NBA Draft Lottery was introduced in 1985 to discourage teams from losing on purpose. Before that, from 1966 to 1984, the teams with the worst record in each conference would simply flip a coin to determine the No. 1 pick.
