In 2023, the state welcomed over 800,000 tourists in total, and by 2024, foreign arrivals alone surged to 737,000, even surpassing traditional destinations like Goa. This growth is largely driven by the state's rich Buddhist circuit. The state is home to a vast array of historical and spiritual sites, including the ruins of Nalanda, one of the world's first residential universities, and Rajgir's Vishwa Shanti Stupa. The government is actively encouraging tourism through initiatives like the Bihar Tourism Policy 2023, which offers financial incentives and subsidies to develop infrastructure and attract investment in the sector. The traveler's visit to Gaya holds particular significance as it's a major pilgrimage hub for multiple religions. For Hindus, it's a sacred site for ancestral rituals by the Falgu River, while nearby Bodh Gaya is where Buddha attained enlightenment, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site and a primary destination for Buddhists globally. Patna, the state capital, stands on the site of the ancient city of Pataliputra, once one of the largest cities in the world.
