Kiffik Biomedical Closes Series A for Diagnostics
LA-area biotech KIFFIK Biomedical has closed an oversubscribed Series A to advance its real-time molecular diagnostics platform. The funding signals strong investor interest in ML-driven health data analysis and personalized medicine.
The recently closed Series A funding for Kiffik Biomedical totaled $20 million and was oversubscribed. This capital infusion is earmarked for the expansion of its diagnostic platform and to move forward five clinical programs in the areas of oncology, neurology, and cardiometabolic diseases. Kiffik's core technology is a wearable device that provides non-invasive and continuous access to interstitial fluid (ISF). This is achieved through a patented process involving electroporation to create temporary micro-openings in the skin, followed by negative pressure to extract the ISF. This method avoids needles and provides real-time biological data. The company, founded in 2021, is led by President and CEO George Cagna, a veteran with over three decades of experience in the medical device industry, including leadership roles at major companies like Boston Scientific and Medtronic. The leadership team was recently expanded with the addition of Rene Veloso as Chief Investment Officer and Dr. Reginald Swift as a fractional Chief Scientific Officer. By analyzing the information-rich ISF, Kiffik's platform aims to detect molecular changes at the tissue level where diseases often originate. This approach offers a potential advantage over traditional blood-based testing by capturing dynamic biomarker data that could lead to earlier disease detection and more personalized therapeutic strategies. The platform's reliance on analyzing vast amounts of molecular data aligns with the growing trend of integrating machine learning and AI in diagnostics. These technologies are crucial for identifying subtle patterns and predictive biomarkers from complex datasets, which is central to Kiffik's goal of advancing precision medicine. Kiffik has already established strategic partnerships to further its technology. Collaborations with companies like Rubix Life Sciences are focused on developing new diagnostic tests, such as a non-invasive test for colorectal cancer by combining Kiffik's ISF collection with advanced detection technologies.
