Parks: book early this summer
National parks are tightening access and opening facilities on staggered schedules, so plan and book early for summer visits. (buckrail.com) Grand Teton's main road is slated to open Friday, May 1 with facilities like Gros Ventre Campground among early openings, Acadia has publicly urged visitors to plan ahead for a busy 2026 season, and Haleakalā still requires a timed reservation for non-commercial vehicles entering the summit between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., with June–August flagged as peak. Summer trips to national parks are getting harder to improvise, with roads, campgrounds and sunrise access all opening on staggered schedules. (nps.gov) Grand Teton’s Teton Park Road is scheduled to open to motor vehicles on May 1, while Gros Ventre Campground is listed to open April 27 on the park’s 2026 status page. Jenny Lake Campground is set for May 2 on the National Park Service page, while the Grand Teton National Park Foundation lists May 8 for that campground on its opening-dates roundup. (nps.gov) (gtnpf.org) Acadia told visitors on April 14 to expect a “BUSY” 2026 summer season and to plan ahead before arriving. The majority of Park Loop Road reopens to motor vehicles on April 15, but the section between Kebo Street and Sieur de Monts is closed to all uses through June 12, except Memorial Day weekend. (nps.gov) Haleakalā still requires a reservation for each non-commercial vehicle entering the summit district between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. for sunrise. Recreation.gov says tickets are released up to 60 days ahead and again 2 days ahead, with a $1 reservation fee per vehicle. (recreation.gov) (nps.gov) That means “open for summer” no longer means fully open on one date. In Grand Teton, visitor centers, campgrounds and boat access roll out from April into June, and Acadia is reopening roads while keeping construction and seasonal closures in place. (nps.gov 1) (nps.gov 2) The pressure is strongest at the most popular choke points: sunrise at Haleakalā, Park Loop Road in Acadia, and the main road-and-campground network in Grand Teton. The National Park Service says Grand Teton’s busiest months are May through September, and Acadia is already warning that summer demand will be heavy. (nps.gov 1) (nps.gov 2) Acadia’s spring setup shows how layered those restrictions can be. Cadillac Summit Road is closed through April 30 for construction, carriage roads have been closed since March 19 during spring thaw, and several trails are closed for peregrine falcon nesting season. (nps.gov) Grand Teton’s 2026 calendar is just as piecemeal. Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center opened April 10, Signal Mountain Lodge is scheduled for May 8, Colter Bay Visitor Center for May 9, and Jenny Lake Ranger Station is expected to open June 6. (nps.gov) Haleakalā’s sunrise system has been in place since 2017, and park officials say it is tied to limited parking, visitor safety and protection of natural and cultural resources at the summit. Visitors without a reservation can still enter after 7:00 a.m. (nps.gov) (recreation.gov) For travelers, the practical deadline is often earlier than the trip itself: the day reservations drop, the day a campground opens for booking, or the day a road segment finally reopens. By Memorial Day, the people with plans will already have them. (recreation.gov) (nps.gov)
