Michelin widens US reach
Michelin’s 2026 footprint is spreading beyond big coastal cities — Tennessee’s new listings now cover 37 restaurants and even highlight Lunch in Sewanee as a recommended stop. The guide’s American expansion also explicitly touches the Great Lakes region, prompting local debates in Indianapolis about which restaurants might now deserve stars. Michelin is pushing deeper into the middle of the country, with Tennessee now listing 36 restaurants and a new Great Lakes edition set to cover Indianapolis and five other cities. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) In Tennessee, the guide’s current statewide page shows “1-36 of 36 restaurants,” spanning Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Sewanee, Franklin, Maryville, Cordova and Madison. Michelin’s 2026 American South ceremony is scheduled for October 21 in Nashville at The Pinnacle. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) One of those Tennessee picks is Lunch in Sewanee, where Michelin lists Chef Mallory Tubbs’ restaurant at 24 University Ave. and describes a daytime menu built around local farm products, pastries and dishes such as huevos rancheros and a steak sandwich on house-made baguette. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin’s regional model is now stretching beyond its older United States strongholds in New York, California, Illinois, Washington, District of Columbia, Colorado and Florida. In 2025, Michelin launched its first American South regional selection, and in April 2026 it announced an American Great Lakes edition. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) The new Great Lakes guide will cover Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. Michelin said April 7 that inspectors are already visiting restaurants there and that the inaugural selection will be revealed in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) That gives Indianapolis its first formal Michelin runway. Visit Indy chief executive Leonard Hoops said Michelin had chosen to explore the city’s dining scene, while local coverage in Indianapolis framed the move as the city’s first chance to compete for stars, Bib Gourmand awards and recommended listings. (guide.michelin.com, usatoday.com) Michelin says its inspectors award stars anonymously and separately from tourism partners, even when local convention bureaus help fund expansion into a market. The company has used that public-private model in newer United States regions as it broadens coverage beyond a handful of major coastal cities. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) For smaller places like Sewanee, a Michelin listing now puts a town better known for the University of the South onto the same statewide dining map as Nashville and Memphis. For Indianapolis, the next milestone is farther off: inspectors are already eating, but the first Great Lakes verdicts will not arrive until 2027. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com)
