Instagram Reels Algorithm Updated for 2026

Instagram's 2026 algorithm update for Reels now rewards content with high completion rates and devalues recycled or overly templated posts. The new system reportedly prioritizes original videos, authentic user-generated content (UGC), and participation in community trends. Local signals, such as geo-tags and engagement within a specific area, are also being given increased weight for distribution.

- Instagram's algorithm weighs both completion rate (the percentage of a Reel watched) and total watch time (the number of seconds viewed) to avoid penalizing longer videos. According to Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, watching 10 seconds of a one-minute video is valued the same as watching a full 10-second clip. - The platform's crackdown on unoriginal content now involves penalizing accounts that share 10 or more pieces of unoriginal content within 30 days by removing them from recommendations. When the algorithm detects duplicate content, it will now replace the reposted version in recommendations with the original clip and add a label crediting the original creator. - Geo-tagged posts can receive up to 79% more engagement than those without a location tag. Adding specific location tags to Reels, posts, and Stories makes that content discoverable on that location's page, boosting visibility among local users who are browsing that area. - In December 2024, Instagram removed the ability for users to follow hashtags, significantly reducing their impact on reach. The platform has shifted to a keyword-based SEO model where relevant keywords in captions, the user's bio, and alt text are now more critical for content discovery through search. - A feature called "Your Algorithm," introduced in late 2025, allows users to directly customize their Reels feed by selecting topics they want to see more or less of. This increases the importance of "topic clarity," as accounts with a consistent content theme are more easily categorized and recommended to interested users. - Not all engagement signals are weighted equally; shares and saves are considered stronger indicators of quality content than likes. According to Instagram, shares (or "sends") are particularly crucial for reaching new audiences, while likes are more of a ranking factor for showing content to existing followers. - The system's focus has evolved from simply promoting entertaining and viral content in its early stages to an AI-driven model that now heavily prioritizes originality and a personalized viewing experience. This change is part of a strategy to give smaller creators a better opportunity to expand their reach on the platform.
