Meerut Metro Inaugurated
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the new Meerut Metro. The launch marks a significant infrastructure development for the Tier 2 city. Such projects can impact local commerce, logistics, and consumer mobility in the region.
- The Meerut Metro is a rapid transit system being developed in two phases; the first phase covers a 23.6 km stretch with 13 stations from Modipuram to Meerut South. - This project is uniquely integrated with the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), sharing a single corridor and four stations, a first for any Indian rapid transit system. - The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is the operating body for the Meerut Metro, with an estimated project cost of ₹11,540 crore. - With an operational speed of 120 km/h, the Meerut Metro is set to be the fastest metro system in India. - The metro's trains are manufactured by Alstom in Savli, Gujarat, with the first trainset delivered in February 2024. - This metro line is part of the larger 82.15 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, branded as Namo Bharat, which aims to reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under an hour. - The broader RRTS project, which includes the Meerut Metro section, is being developed at a cost of ₹30,274 crore. - The Sarai Kale Khan station in Delhi will serve as a major multi-modal hub, connecting the Namo Bharat corridor with the Delhi Metro's Pink Line, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, and the Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT.
