Health Department Issues Advisory for Willow Creek

The county health department has issued an advisory for Willow Creek after detecting elevated levels of E. coli bacteria in the water. Residents are advised to avoid swimming, fishing, or any other contact with the water until further notice. Testing is currently underway to identify the source of the contamination.

- E. coli contamination can originate from various sources, including untreated human sewage, failing septic tanks, agricultural runoff from livestock, and waste from pets and wildlife. Heavy rainfall can exacerbate the problem by washing contaminants from riverbanks and causing sewer overflows. - While many strains of E. coli are harmless and live in the intestines of people and animals, certain strains like E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe illness, including stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. - Symptoms of an E. coli infection typically appear three to four days after exposure to the bacteria. In a small percentage of cases, particularly in young children and the elderly, infection with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) can lead to a life-threatening kidney failure condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). - Health advisories for bacterial contamination are typically lifted once water sample results fall below a certain threshold; for example, some jurisdictions use a limit of 104 colony-forming units (CFU) per 100mL. - In 2018, a health advisory was issued for Willow Creek Reservoir in Oregon due to the presence of cyanobacteria, also known as harmful blue-green algae, which can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. Another advisory was issued for the same reservoir in 2023 for the same reason. - After an advisory is lifted, it is often recommended to flush plumbing by running cold water through all faucets for at least five minutes to remove any lingering contaminants. It is also suggested to discard any ice made during the advisory and to clean and sanitize ice makers.
