Michelin expands U.S.
The Michelin Guide is expanding into the American Great Lakes region and is actively reviewing Cleveland, while Boston received six Bib Gourmand awards in its first Michelin year. Michelin is pushing deeper into the United States, adding an American Great Lakes edition that will cover Cleveland and five other cities, with first ratings due in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin said on April 8 that the new regional guide will include Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. The company said its anonymous inspectors are already dining across the region. (guide.michelin.com) Boston offers the clearest recent example of what that expansion can look like. In Michelin’s first Boston guide for 2025, the city landed one star, six Bib Gourmand awards and a broader list of recommended restaurants. (guide.michelin.com) The Bib Gourmand label is Michelin’s value category, not its star system. Michelin defines it as good quality cooking at a good value, and Boston now has six such spots in the guide. (guide.michelin.com; guide.michelin.com) Boston’s first star went to 311 Omakase, and the six Bib Gourmands included Bar Volpe, Fox & The Knife and Mahaniyom. Michelin’s current Boston page lists 26 restaurants across starred, Bib Gourmand and recommended categories. (guide.michelin.com; guide.michelin.com; guide.michelin.com) For Cleveland, the guide’s arrival puts a national scoring system on a city that has spent years building chef reputations through other awards. Axios Cleveland reported that local names such as Cordelia, Zhug and Larder are already being discussed as possible contenders. (axios.com; axios.com) Cordelia chef Vinnie Cimino was named a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category, and Zhug’s Douglas Katz was part of a 2025 James Beard semifinalist team for Outstanding Restaurateurs. Those honors do not predict Michelin results, but they show which Cleveland kitchens already have national attention. (clevelandmagazine.com; zhugcle.com) Michelin said the full Great Lakes selection will be revealed at a ceremony in 2027, with the date still to be announced. Until then, Cleveland is in the same phase Boston was in last year: inspectors in the field, restaurants guessing, and a new map of American dining taking shape city by city.
