PlayStation Plus to Add RPGs

PlayStation Plus is expected to add Persona 5 Royal and potentially Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Final Fantasy 16 to its Extra and Premium tiers this March.

The addition of these RPGs could significantly boost the value proposition of PlayStation Plus, potentially attracting new subscribers and encouraging existing ones to upgrade to higher tiers. In fiscal year 2024, approximately 38% of PlayStation Plus subscribers were on the Premium or Extra tiers, a jump from 30% in fiscal year 2022. This move aligns with the increasing popularity of RPGs, a market projected to reach $47.92 billion in 2026. RPGs attract a wide player base due to immersive storytelling and player agency, with over 52% of millennials actively participating in the format. However, PlayStation Plus has seen fluctuating subscriber numbers in the past, even after significant updates to the service. In 2022, following the launch of PS Plus Extra and Premium, the number of subscribers dropped by nearly 2 million. The addition of new, high-profile games may be a strategy to reverse this trend.
