Generic Semaglutide Coming to Market

Prescription referral service PharmaGiant.com announced an expansion of its generic medication catalog, which will soon include generic semaglutide. The move aims to increase access to affordable medications as prescription drug costs continue to rise in the United States.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk's blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, used for type 2 diabetes and weight management. The high demand for these treatments has intensified the race for generic alternatives, with Ozempic alone generating approximately $14 billion in sales in 2023. While a U.S. patent protects semaglutide until at least 2031, key international patents are expiring much sooner. Core patents in countries like China, India, Brazil, and Canada are set to expire in 2026, opening the door for generic competition in those markets. This staggered patent expiration explains why a Canadian prescription referral service can offer generic semaglutide to U.S. patients. Canada is expected to be one of the first countries, along with India, to see generic versions launch as early as summer 2026. Pharmaceutical manufacturers in India are already preparing for "Day 1" launches of their generic semaglutide products, timed to coincide with the patent expiry in March 2026. This influx of competition is anticipated to significantly drive down prices in the markets where it becomes available. The original drug manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, maintains a complex portfolio of patents covering not only the drug's main compound but also its formulation and injection pen technology. The company is actively engaged in litigation to defend its intellectual property and manage the transition as its exclusivity periods end in various regions.
