Trump Nominates Kevin Warsh as Fed Chair

President Trump has nominated Kevin Warsh to be the next Federal Reserve chair. The move signals a potential change in leadership and future policy direction for the central bank, though Jerome Powell will remain a key figure until the transition is complete.

Kevin Warsh is no stranger to the central bank, having served as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011. His appointment by President George W. Bush at age 35 made him the youngest governor in the Fed's history, a move that drew some criticism at the time for his relative inexperience. During the 2008 financial crisis, Warsh was a key figure, acting as the Federal Reserve's main liaison to Wall Street. He worked closely with then-Chair Ben Bernanke and New York Fed President Timothy Geithner, playing a significant role in the negotiations to stabilize major financial institutions. Warsh resigned from the Fed in March 2011, citing disagreements over the central bank's direction, particularly its second round of quantitative easing (QE2). He has remained a vocal critic of the Fed's large balance sheet, arguing it creates market distortions and risks the central bank's credibility. A long-time proponent of price stability, Warsh has argued that controlling inflation is the Fed's most essential duty, above other considerations like climate change or fiscal policy. He has described inflation as a "choice" resulting from excessive government spending enabled by central banks "printing too much money." His policy stance is seen as a departure from the Powell-era Fed, though Warsh has recently advocated for interest rate cuts. He argues that productivity booms linked to artificial intelligence could be disinflationary, allowing for lower rates without compromising inflation targets. Since leaving the Fed, Warsh has been a distinguished visiting fellow in economics at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He also served on a business forum assembled by then-President-elect Trump in December 2016 to provide advice on economic issues.
