Utah measles surge: 121 cases

Utah’s measles outbreak is now the most active in the United States, with 583 confirmed cases reported by April 8. (utahnewsdispatch.com) Utah health officials said 386 of those cases were reported in 2026, and 121 were diagnosed in the previous three weeks. The outbreak began in June 2025 and the state’s public dashboard is updated each Tuesday. (fox13now.com) The Utah Department of Health and Human Services posted 559 total cases as of March 31, including 142 reported in the prior three weeks, and warned that some exposure sites may still be unknown because measles is spreading in the state. The agency also says the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a location. (epi.utah.gov) That air spread is why public health teams treat measles differently from many other infections. Symptoms usually appear 7 to 14 days after exposure, and Utah officials tell people with fever, cough, runny nose, or red eyes to watch closely for illness for 21 days after contact. (epi.utah.gov) The outbreak is no longer concentrated only in Utah’s southwest corner. ABC4 reported 249 cases in the Southwest Health Area, 93 in Utah County, and 59 in the TriCounty Health Department region, which had the highest rate at 102.4 cases per 100,000 people. (abc4.com) Schools and a college campus have also been pulled into the response. ABC4 reported confirmed measles cases tied to elementary and middle schools and to the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. (abc4.com) Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 1,714 confirmed measles cases had been reported in 2026 as of April 9, across 33 jurisdictions and 10 international visitors. The agency said 94% of those cases were linked to outbreaks. (cdc.gov) Utah entered this outbreak with weaker school vaccine coverage than health officials recommend. A Utah Department of Health and Human Services kindergarten report said 9% of in-person kindergartners had an exemption to at least one required vaccine in the 2024-25 school year, up from a pre-pandemic average of 5%. (immunize-training.at.utah.gov) State and county health officials are still posting exposure locations and urging residents to check vaccination records, because the case count has kept rising week after week instead of fading out.
