Global RAM Crisis Reportedly Worsening

The global memory market is facing deepening disruptions as the RAM crisis keeps getting worse. Ongoing supply chain problems and demand spikes are continuing to drive up the cost and hurt the availability of RAM, threatening hardware-dependent projects.

The current crisis is less a random shortage and more a structural pivot by manufacturers. The "big three" memory makers—Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron—are deliberately reallocating production capacity from consumer RAM like DDR5 to more profitable High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) to serve the booming AI industry. The AI sector's demand is immense, with a single AI server requiring as much memory as dozens or even hundreds of laptops. This has led to tech giants like OpenAI and Alphabet purchasing a huge portion of the world's memory supply, with estimates suggesting data centers will consume 70% of all RAM produced this year. This shift has caused staggering price increases for consumers. DRAM prices saw a surge of 172% in 2025, with some standard 32GB DDR5 memory kits jumping from under $200 to over $750 in a matter of months. Even older DDR4 memory has seen prices double or triple. The market is highly concentrated, with the three main suppliers controlling about 95% of production. In a clear signal of priorities, Micron announced it will scrap its well-known "Crucial" brand of consumer RAM and SSDs to focus entirely on the more lucrative AI and data center markets. The fallout affects more than just PC builders. The smartphone market is projected to shrink by 160 million units in 2026, with one analyst stating the crisis makes the pandemic's impact "seem like a joke." Game consoles, tablets, and even smart appliances are all impacted by the diverted supply. Relief is not expected in the near future. Industry executives and analysts predict the memory shortage will persist until at least 2027, with some forecasting constraints lasting into 2028. While new fabrication plants are being built, they are not expected to be fully operational for at least another year.
