An eight-week community fitness challenge called Walking Kentucky is set to kick off in Oldham County with a Friday, April 24, event and a walking program that starts May 1. The Oldham County Cooperative Extension Office says participants can join solo or on teams, log “steps” from any physical activity, and work toward a shared goal of 417 miles in two months. The kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on April 24 at the Extension office in La Grange. Weekly meetups are planned as “Walking Wednesdays” at local parks, and the Oldham listing says participants will get weekly newsletters with tips and information. The same notice says a Walking Kentucky shirt costs $12 and is optional. The program is not new. University of Kentucky Extension reporting describes Walking Kentucky as a community campaign built to increase physical activity and health awareness, with no special equipment or dedicated workout space required. County Extension offices in the Louisville-area region have run the challenge together before. A 2024 Spencer County Extension report said Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, and Trimble agents collaborated on the 417-mile version of the program. That Spencer County report said 70 adults took part in 2024, and 87 percent said they achieved their fitness goals. A separate University of Kentucky Extension success story describes the challenge as an eight-week effort to increase regular physical activity and improve health outcomes. The format lines up with federal exercise guidance that adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, with the time spread across the week if needed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says brisk walking counts toward that total. For Oldham County residents, the next date on the calendar is the April 24 kickoff in La Grange. The walking portion then opens May 1 and runs through the two-month challenge period.
