Novo Nordisk teams with OpenAI

Novo Nordisk announced a partnership with OpenAI to apply AI across drug discovery, manufacturing and operations while saying it won't immediately cut staff but will slow hiring. Novo Nordisk said on April 14 it is partnering with OpenAI to use artificial intelligence across drug discovery, manufacturing and commercial operations. (biospace.com) The Danish drugmaker said the tools will be used to analyze large datasets, identify drug candidates and cut the time from research to patient use. Pilot programs start in research and development, manufacturing and commercial teams, with full integration planned by the end of 2026. (biospace.com) OpenAI said it will also help train Novo Nordisk’s workforce, and Novo said the system will run with strict data protection, governance and human oversight. Chief executive Mike Doustdar said the company is using artificial intelligence to “supercharge” scientists rather than replace them. (biospace.com) (computing.net) Drug discovery is the process of finding and testing molecules that might become medicines, and it usually takes years of lab work, animal studies and human trials before a product reaches patients. Artificial intelligence can help sort through huge volumes of biology, chemistry and manufacturing data faster than human teams can do by hand. (cnbc.com) Drugmakers have been trying to use these systems in narrower tasks first, including finding clinical trial sites and screening research data. Arthur D. Little partner Ben van der Schaaf told CNBC last month that artificial intelligence is still not an “end-to-end component” for drug development. (cnbc.com) Novo Nordisk is making the move while trying to regain momentum in obesity and diabetes after losing ground to Eli Lilly in the weight-loss market. Reuters reported the company said the OpenAI rollout comes as it works to speed development and improve operations across the business. (money.usnews.com) Other large drugmakers have already signed similar deals. Fierce Pharma reported Eli Lilly struck an OpenAI collaboration in 2024 focused on drug-resistant bacteria, while Sanofi, Formation Bio, Moderna and Thermo Fisher have also announced OpenAI-linked projects. (fiercepharma.com) Novo Nordisk’s shares rose 2.8% shortly after the U.S. market open on April 14 after the announcement. Investors now have a nearer checkpoint on May 6, when the company is scheduled to report first-quarter results. (cnbc.com) (fiercepharma.com)
