Ryan Tomash Joins NYC Ballet

Ryan Tomash has been elevated to principal dancer at the New York City Ballet for the 2025-26 season. Tomash, currently on leave from the Royal Danish Ballet, is expected to bring fresh energy and expertise to NYCB's ranks in this major career move.

Before joining the New York City Ballet, Ryan Tomash had a rapid rise at the Royal Danish Ballet. The Toronto-born dancer joined the company's corps de ballet in 2017, was promoted to soloist in 2021, and then reached the rank of principal dancer in 2022. His training began at age 10 at Canada's National Ballet School, where he studied under instructors including Sergiu Stefanschi and Alexander Gorbatsevich. This foundation prepared him for an international career that has included guest artist appearances with the Tivoli Ballet and Hamburg Ballet. Tomash has already danced several leading roles at NYCB since joining for the 2025-26 season. His repertoire includes parts in George Balanchine's "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker," as well as originating a role in Jamar Roberts' "Foreseeable Future." His promotion to principal dancer was announced by Artistic Director Jonathan Stafford and Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan. The announcement followed a matinee performance on Saturday, February 28, 2026, where Tomash performed a leading role in Jerome Robbins' "Dances at a Gathering." Tomash is an acclaimed dancer, having received numerous awards. He was named a Knight of Dannebrog in 2024 and has won Denmark's Reumert Award for Dancer of the Year (2025) and the Positano Premia la Danza Dancer of the Year award (2023), among other honors.
