Rodri Fined £80k for Referee Comments

Manchester City midfielder Rodri avoided a playing ban but was fined £80,000 by the FA for criticizing referee Robert Jones after City's 2-2 draw with Tottenham on February 1. Rodri had accused the official of not being "neutral," but the FA decision means he remains available for selection with just a formal warning.

Rodri’s comments came after Manchester City relinquished a 2-0 halftime lead against Tottenham, with goals from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo initially putting the league leaders in a commanding position. The turning point that drew Rodri's anger was Dominic Solanke's 53rd-minute goal, where he appeared to kick through the leg of City defender Marc Guéhi to score. The FA charged the Spanish midfielder under Rule E3.1, which pertains to comments that "imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official." In his post-match interview, Rodri stated, "I know we won too much and the people don't want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral. It's not fair because we work so hard." In his defense, Rodri submitted two letters to the independent regulatory commission. He initially claimed his words were "misunderstood and misinterpreted" before acknowledging in a second letter that they were "inappropriate and fell below the standard expected." He apologized and clarified that he did not intend to question the referee's integrity. The decision to issue a fine rather than a suspension was influenced by several factors, including Rodri's admission of the charge and his previously clean disciplinary record regarding media comments. Manchester City also submitted evidence of previous cases where club managers like Frank Lampard and Marco Silva were fined but not banned for similar comments about officials. This contrasts with the case of Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in 2023, who received a two-match touchline ban and a £75,000 fine for questioning referee Paul Tierney's integrity. Klopp had a history of prior offenses, which was taken into consideration by the disciplinary commission.
