Sticker shock at NYIAS

Reporting from the New York Auto Show is leaning on affordability — commentators flagged 'sticker shock' and buyers re‑assessing total cost of ownership. (youtube.com) The show still showcased SUVs and electrified models, including Hyundai’s Palisade XRT Pro and Dodge’s Durango GT America250, but coverage emphasized rising prices and financing strain. At the 2026 New York International Auto Show, the big question was not what looked new. It was what buyers can still afford. (autoshowny.com, edmunds.com) The show ran April 3-12 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center with more than 30 brands, more than 750 vehicles and indoor test tracks for hybrid and electric models. Organizers pitched it as a place to compare “nearly every segment, powertrain, and price point” side by side. (autoshowny.com, autoshowny.com) That comparison came as the average new-vehicle transaction price hit $49,275 in March 2026, up 3.5 percent from a year earlier, according to Kelley Blue Book. The average amount financed on a new vehicle reached a record $43,899 in the first quarter, and the average monthly payment rose to $773, according to Edmunds. (coxautoinc.com, edmunds.com) Edmunds said 20 percent of financed new-car purchases in the first quarter carried payments of at least $1,000 a month. It also said 84-month loans made up 22.9 percent of financed new-car deals, the highest share on record. (edmunds.com) Those numbers help explain why affordability kept surfacing around a show floor still packed with sport utility vehicles, pickups and special editions. Kelley Blue Book said larger vehicles such as full-size pickups and sport utility vehicles gained share in March as compact and subcompact models lost ground. (coxautoinc.com, autoshowny.com) Hyundai’s display leaned into adventure branding around the 2026 Palisade XRT Pro, with Event Marketer describing a topographical-map backdrop built to draw attention to the off-road-focused three-row vehicle. Hyundai introduced the redesigned 2026 Palisade at the New York show last year and later said the first hybrid version can deliver up to 34 miles per gallon and more than 600 miles of range. (eventmarketer.com, hyundainews.com, hyundainews.com) Dodge used the media preview to unveil the 2026 Durango GT America250 edition, tied to the national America250 commemoration. Dodge said the special edition starts at $49,590 for the all-wheel-drive V-6 model and rises to $54,270 for the HEMI Premium version, before tax, title and fees. (dodgegarage.com) Show organizers said opening-weekend attendance was up more than 25 percent from a year earlier and the strongest since the show’s 2022 post-pandemic return. The crowds were there to look, compare and climb in, but the math followed them from one booth to the next. (eventmarketer.com, autoshowny.com)
