Hyperion’s New Vinyl Drop

Hyperion Records announced limited-edition 180g LP pressings — full-color gatefolds featuring Trinity College Choir, pianist Stephen Hough, and Mishka Piano — that lean into the audiophile/classical market’s appetite for premium vinyl. Limited runs like these are exactly what collectors chase for higher fidelity and attractive packaging. (x.com)

Hyperion is taking three classical albums that were born on compact disc and download stores and giving them the kind of vinyl treatment usually aimed at rock reissues: limited-edition 180-gram long-playing records, full-colour gatefold sleeves, and printed notes inside. The fifth batch in its Vinyl Edition series is set for release on 15 May 2026. (youtube.com) That matters because Hyperion is not a nostalgia brand that started in the vinyl era and never left. On its own site, the label still presents itself first as a British classical company selling compact discs, MP3 files, and lossless downloads across music from the twelfth century to the twenty-first. (hyperion-records.co.uk) The vinyl line is no side project now. Hyperion’s catalogue page shows more than 20 Vinyl Edition titles already on sale or scheduled, with May 2026 releases including Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor, Stephen Hough’s Piano Concerto, Sonatina & Partita, and Mishka Rushdie Momen’s Reformation. (hyperion-records.co.uk) The label is also selling scarcity, not just format. Hyperion’s announcement calls these records limited editions, which is collector language for “buy now or pay resale prices later,” especially in classical music where represses are less predictable than in pop. (youtube.com) The Trinity College Cambridge title is Bach’s Mass in B minor, a two-hour monument of church music that Hyperion first released in March 2018 after sessions in Trinity College Chapel in January 2017. The new vinyl page says these 180-gram long-playing records are part of the 2026 series and were mastered by Sidney Claire Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios. (hyperion-records.co.uk, hyperion-records.co.uk) The Stephen Hough record leans the other way: newer music, bigger name recognition, and a pianist who is also the composer. Hyperion lists Sir Stephen Hough’s vinyl edition at £20, tied to the premiere recording of his piano concerto with The Hallé under Sir Mark Elder, after the album’s compact disc release in April 2025. (hyperion-records.co.uk) Hough is exactly the kind of artist who can move a premium pressing in classical. Hyperion says he has a discography of 70 recordings, eight Gramophone Awards, several Grammy nominations, and a 2022 knighthood, which turns a niche format launch into a star-driven catalogue event. (hyperion-records.co.uk) The Mishka Rushdie Momen release is Reformation, a Tudor keyboard album first issued on compact disc in July 2024 and now due on vinyl on 15 May 2026. Hyperion describes her as a Hyperion debutante on that album and says the vinyl was also mastered by Sidney Claire Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios. (hyperion-records.co.uk, hyperion-records.co.uk) That mastering credit is new for the whole batch. Hyperion’s post says this is the first time titles in the series have been mastered by Sidney Claire Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios, a Berlin facility whose name carries weight with audiophile buyers in the same way a prestige book printer does for art books. (youtube.com) There is also a quiet business story under the packaging. Hyperion was founded in 1980 as an independent British classical label and was acquired by Universal Music Group in February 2023, so this kind of premium-format expansion now sits on top of a much larger distribution machine than the company had in its independent years. (wikipedia.org) So the pitch is simple and expensive in exactly the right way: one famous choir, one marquee pianist-composer, one rising pianist, all pressed on heavyweight vinyl with gatefold artwork and notes, all landing on 15 May 2026. In classical music, where listeners still care about sound, objects, and shelf presence, that is less a novelty drop than a carefully engineered collector product.
