Material costs creeping up

Architectural glass and metal companies have raised prices in recent weeks, a direct hit to renovations that need custom windows, facades or metalwork and a likely source of budget creep this spring. ( ).

The new squeeze on renovation budgets is showing up in places homeowners and landlords usually price last: custom window packages, curtain walls, railings, and other made-to-order parts that cannot be swapped for an off-the-shelf substitute. Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope told customers it will make a 10% adjustment to existing aluminum multipliers on April 20, 2026, and Blue Star Architectural Glass announced a 16% energy surcharge. (usglassmag.com) Those notices landed just as March inflation jumped again in the broader economy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the Consumer Price Index rose 0.9% in March and 3.3% over the prior 12 months, with gasoline prices up sharply. (bls.gov, cnbc.com) Glass and metal shops care about fuel prices because a window wall is basically frozen heat plus trucking. Blue Star said its surcharge reflects natural gas, diesel fuel, and freight costs, all of which have been volatile in recent months. (usglassmag.com) The metal side is getting hit from a second direction at the same time. United States Glass Magazine reported that aluminum prices have climbed 10% since the Iran war began in February 2026, after attacks on smelters and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz tightened supply. (usglassmag.com) Tariffs were already sitting underneath those costs before the latest energy shock arrived. United States Glass Magazine reported in January that glass and architectural metal companies were still absorbing historically large import duties on materials including aluminum, steel, and copper, even if the real paid rate was below the loudest headline numbers. (usglassmag.com) That is why this is hitting renovation work faster than some new construction. A developer can redesign a future building around a cheaper detail, but a spring renovation that needs replacement storefront glass, matching metal windows, or custom handrails usually has to buy the exact shape and finish the job already calls for. (usglassmag.com) The price pressure was already visible before this week’s supplier letters. Producer Price Index data cited by United States Glass Magazine showed metal window prices in February 2026 were 20.3% higher than a year earlier, ornamental and architectural metalwork was up 11%, fabricated structural metal products were up 9%, and flat glass products were up 4.5%. (usglassmag.com) Those February numbers matter because they do not even include the newest war-driven increases. United States Glass Magazine said none of the February Producer Price Index data captured the more recent price jumps tied to the Iran conflict, which means many bids written in March may already be stale by April. (usglassmag.com) For anyone pricing a renovation now, the risk is less a single giant shock than repeated small revisions. Oldcastle said quotes issued before April 20 stay valid for 30 days under original terms, while quotes issued on or after April 20 will reflect the updated multipliers, which is the kind of deadline that can turn a delayed approval into a more expensive order. (usglassmag.com) And the increases are spreading beyond one fabricator or one product line. Fenzi, which supplies sealants, spacers, and coatings used in insulated glass, also told customers that a new price list adjustment is expected in the coming weeks because of pressure on materials, energy, and logistics.
