FaceTec Targets Healthcare Identity Fraud

3D face verification company FaceTec announced a new solution using 'UR Codes' to combat an estimated $30 billion in healthcare identity fraud. The technology aims to bind a patient's verified identity to any document, which the company claims will improve patient matching and prevent fraudulent service delivery. The announcement was made on February 20.

- The core of the technology is a 3D "FaceMap" of the patient, which is created during a one-time enrollment process. This isn't just a photo, but a biometric template that is virtually impossible to spoof with a 2D picture or video. - This 3D FaceMap is converted into a compact, encrypted biometric data file that is then embedded into a QR code, which FaceTec calls a "UR Code". This code can be printed on patient documents or stored digitally. - To ensure the integrity of the UR Code, it is cryptographically signed by the issuing healthcare provider using an Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). This makes any tampering with the patient data in the code detectable. - When a patient presents for care, they perform a quick 3D face scan. The system then matches the new scan to the biometric data in the UR Code, ensuring the person is both the correct patient and physically present. - This technology directly counters common fraud schemes like "phantom billing" (billing for services never rendered) and medical identity theft by requiring the patient's biometric presence to authorize services. - For telehealth services, the same 3D liveness verification can be used to securely authenticate a patient before a virtual visit, preventing unauthorized access to medical advice and prescriptions. - FaceTec has a standing $600,000 bug bounty program to encourage ethical hackers to find and report any vulnerabilities in their 3D liveness detection system. - While the solution has been announced for the healthcare industry, specific partnerships with hospital systems or major insurance carriers have not yet been publicly disclosed.
