2026 F1 Rules Scramble Order

Formula 1's new 2026 technical regulations have "scrambled the pecking order" according to preseason testing in Bahrain. Mercedes, Red Bull, and other teams have all shown flashes of speed, but the new aerodynamics and energy management rules are making it impossible to predict who will dominate the season opener. Drivers and teams alike are confused about true performance levels heading into the first race.

- The new power units will feature a 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and electrical power, a major shift from the previous 80/20 split. While the 1.6-litre V6 engine configuration remains, the MGU-H component has been removed, and the MGU-K's electrical power output will nearly triple from 120kW to 350kW. - A key change is the introduction of "active aerodynamics," which replaces the Drag Reduction System (DRS). This system allows drivers to adjust both the front and rear wings on designated straights to reduce drag, a function available on every lap regardless of proximity to another car. - The regulations introduce the "Nimble Car Concept," making the cars physically smaller and more agile. The maximum wheelbase is reduced by 200mm, the width is cut by 100mm, and the minimum weight is dropped by 30kg. - To aid overtaking, a new "MGU-K Override" or "Overtake Mode" will provide a manual boost of electrical power for a driver following within one second of a car ahead. - The 2026 power units will be powered by 100% advanced sustainable fuels, a significant step in Formula 1's goal to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030. - The new regulations have successfully attracted new and returning manufacturers. Audi will enter as a works team, Ford will partner with Red Bull Powertrains, Honda will return to supply Aston Martin, and Cadillac will join the grid as a new team using Ferrari power units. - Safety structures have been enhanced, with the roll hoop strengthened to withstand 20G loads and a new two-stage front impact structure designed to better protect drivers in crashes with secondary impacts.
