Museum of the African Diaspora Hosts Student Showcase
San Francisco's Museum of the African Diaspora (MOAD) is hosting a Black History Month Student Showcase today, February 26th. The event is free, open to all ages, and will feature a range of student performances and exhibitions that celebrate Black history and culture.
- The museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate, a partnership that allows it to share resources and content with the national network of Smithsonian museums. - This showcase is a collaboration with 826 Valencia, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting under-resourced students with their writing skills; the event features young authors from 826 Valencia's Black Students Initiative sharing their original work. - MoAD places a strong emphasis on youth education through programs like "MoAD in the Classroom," an arts-based visual literacy program for 3rd and 4th graders in Bay Area Title I schools. - The museum also offers a paid summer apprenticeship for teens, a five-week program designed to empower young people interested in pursuing careers in the visual arts by providing mentorship and hands-on experience. - Since 2014, MoAD has focused exclusively on exhibiting contemporary art, and it does not maintain a permanent collection, instead opting to work directly with artists and curators to develop its exhibitions. - Located in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Arts District, the museum occupies the first three floors of the St. Regis Museum Tower. - In October 2025, MoAD celebrated its 20th anniversary with the launch of a new major exhibition, "UNBOUND: Art, Blackness & the Universe," which will be on view through August 2026. - To increase community access, MoAD offers free admission on the second Saturday of each month through its "THRIVE @ MoAD" program.
