Cyberattacks target food supply chain

A major cyberattack hit Brothers Produce in Texas, with Russian hackers stealing 210GB of data and threatening food supply to critical institutions.

The ransomware group Qilin has claimed responsibility for the Brothers Produce cyberattack. They're threatening to leak sensitive data if the company doesn't negotiate. Brothers Produce is a major distributor in Texas, supplying restaurants, schools, and even military bases. The attack could disrupt the food supply chain in the region. Cyberattacks on the food and agriculture sector are on the rise. In 2024, there was a 27% increase in ransomware attacks on the US food and agriculture sector. The FBI has warned about these kinds of attacks for a while. They've identified ransomware, foreign malware, and data theft as major threats. Food and Ag-ISAC says that these attacks are often opportunistic. Hackers scan for vulnerable systems and use phishing to gain access.
