Body Found After Roxbury Fire
A body was discovered inside a Roxbury residential building on Ellingwood St. following a fire on Friday, February 27. Boston's arson and homicide detectives are now investigating the cause of the fire and the identity of the deceased.
The fire at 4 Ellingwood Street in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Roxbury broke out around 2:55 p.m. on Friday, quickly escalating to a two-alarm blaze that engulfed the three-story residential building. Firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames emanating from all three floors. After extinguishing the fire, authorities discovered a deceased individual on the third floor. The investigation is being handled by the Boston Police Arson and Homicide Units, in conjunction with the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. This multi-agency response is standard procedure for any fire involving a fatality to determine the origin, cause, and to rule out any potential foul play. The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. According to one witness, the fire appeared to start in the basement before rapidly spreading upwards to the second and third floors, with flames described as "shooting right out." The building is located on a dead-end street with row homes, which residents describe as a "tight-knit community." This incident marks another fatal fire in Massachusetts, following a year where the state saw a decrease in fire-related deaths. In 2025, there were 44 fire fatalities in the state, a drop from 50 in 2024. The majority of these fatal fires occurred in residential homes. The leading known cause of fatal fires in 2025 was the unsafe use or disposal of smoking materials.
