Man Breaks into Oakland Police HQ, Steals Radio
A man reportedly broke into the Oakland Police Department headquarters and stole a police radio before being arrested. The security breach occurred on March 4, raising questions about security at the facility.
This incident follows a major cybersecurity breach in 2023 that compromised the personal data of thousands of current and former Oakland city employees, including police officers. The ransomware attack exposed sensitive information such as home addresses, Social Security numbers, and medical information, leading to a class-action lawsuit against the city. An audit in 2022, the year prior to the major data breach, had already warned of "staffing and resource constraints" that could leave the city's digital infrastructure vulnerable to cyberattacks. The theft of a police radio can pose significant risks, including the potential for criminals to monitor police communications in real-time. This could allow them to anticipate law enforcement's movements and better evade capture. In the past, stolen radios have been used to issue malicious hoax calls, diverting police resources. In response to a 2020 California Department of Justice directive aimed at protecting personal information, the Oakland Police Department had been in the process of encrypting its radio communications. This measure is intended to prevent unauthorized listening and enhance the safety of first responders. The security of police facilities themselves is a critical concern. In other cities, there have been documented cases of handheld radios being stolen directly from district stations, highlighting the need for secure storage and strict access protocols. While this break-in involved a physical breach, the Oakland Police Department has also been dealing with other public safety issues. In early March 2026, the department issued a public safety advisory about a suspected prowler linked to multiple incidents in East Oakland.
