Philip Pullman Announces Final Book

Philip Pullman has confirmed the final volume in his beloved "Book of Dust" trilogy. Titled "The Rose Field," this book promises to conclude the story of Lyra Silvertongue, delighting fans who have followed the series for decades.

"The Rose Field" is the culmination of a trilogy that serves as an "equel" to Pullman's original "His Dark Materials" series, taking place both before and after its events. The first installment, "La Belle Sauvage," published in 2017, transported readers to Lyra's infancy, 12 years before the events of "The Golden Compass." In "La Belle Sauvage," a young boy named Malcolm Polstead becomes the protector of the infant Lyra, navigating a great flood to keep her safe from the oppressive Magisterium. The second book, "The Secret Commonwealth," which came out in 2019, jumps forward in time to find a 20-year-old Lyra as an undergraduate student. This second volume sees a significant rift form between Lyra and her dæmon, Pantalaimon, prompting Lyra to journey across Europe and into Asia in search of a city haunted by dæmons without humans. The trilogy delves into the nature of "Dust," a mysterious particle linked to consciousness, a central theme in all of Pullman's related works. Pullman's world is one of parallel universes, where human souls exist externally as animal companions known as dæmons. The overarching narrative pits Lyra and her allies against the Magisterium, a powerful and controlling religious organization that seeks to suppress free inquiry. Fans have eagerly awaited the conclusion to this multi-decade saga, which began with "Northern Lights" (published as "The Golden Compass" in North America) in 1995.
