Atlanta Police Arrest 14 on BeltLine

Fourteen people were arrested and ten guns were recovered on the Atlanta BeltLine following rumors of a "teen takeover." Atlanta police responded to two separate calls at different locations along the popular trail, leading to the arrests and weapon seizures.

The Atlanta Police Department had anticipated the "teen takeover," allocating additional resources and increasing patrols prior to the unauthorized gathering on Saturday night. The response was prompted by social media rumors, a pattern seen in other recent events in the metro area. The 14 arrests stemmed from two main incidents along the BeltLine's popular Eastside Trail: one involving shots fired near 755 North Avenue NE, leading to five arrests, and another concerning a dispute at 789 Ponce De Leon Avenue NE, where nine more individuals were taken into custody. Charges filed against the individuals were extensive and included aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a handgun by a person under 18. Other charges included theft by receiving a stolen firearm, obstruction, making terroristic threats, and reckless conduct. Among those arrested was a 15-year-old girl who was released to a parent; the parent was then charged with a curfew violation. This highlights the focus on the presence of unsupervised juveniles at the gathering. This event is not isolated, following a series of similar "teen takeover" incidents that have put law enforcement on high alert. Just last month, a large gathering at The Battery resulted in over a dozen arrests, and rumors of another at Cumberland Mall led to management implementing a teen curfew. The Atlanta BeltLine is patrolled by a dedicated APD unit called the Path Force, consisting of 15 officers and three supervisors who oversee the trails, parks, and adjacent neighborhoods. The system also utilizes a network of security cameras connected to the city's Video Integration Center to monitor activity.
